21 Savage missed his performance at the 61st annual Grammy Awards on Sunday in Los Angeles, because he was picked up by ICE agents in Atlanta on Super Bowl Sunday.
The British rapper’s mother, Heather Joseph, was invited to attend the Grammy Awards before her son was locked up in an immigration detention center.
Heather and the rapper’s management flew to L.A. to represent the “Bank Account” rapper at the Grammy awards. Their plan was to to walk the Grammys red carpet, but they were denied, according to The Blast.
The troubled rapper’s manager initially showed up at the Staples Center to pick up the tickets and red carpet credentials, but was told the rapper would need to claim the passes himself.
Then Heather went to the Staples Center and pleaded with Grammy officials to release the tickets to her.
According to The Blast, Heather argued that no celebrity on the level of 21 Savage ever picks up his own tickets, and she explained his current legal situation.
After much back and forth, Grammy officials finally released the tickets to Heather – after the red carpet had cleared and the show was about to begin, according to The Blast.
The rapper’s team believe Grammy officials denied Heather the opportunity to walk the red carpet for political reasons.
His management team believes the denial was strategic because word had spread of Heather’s plans to mention her son’s immigration situation during interviews on the red carpet.
According to The Blast, by the time the tickets were released to Heather and the rest of her entourage, they felt offended and chose not to attend the award show.
