When the news broke that Don Cheadle married his girlfriend after 28 years together, everyone assumed he did it for love.
Actually, he did it for money.
The well-known character actor confirmed his nuptials on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” last month. He revealed to guest host Wanda Sykes that he and his longtime girlfriend, Bridgid Coulter, got married during the pandemic after 28 years together.
Fans flooded their social media timelines with compliments and praise. Many single women viewed the couple as proof that true Love will stand the test of time.
However, on Monday, the 56-year-old actor told Entertainment Tonight the real reason why he decided to finally pop the question.
“Our accountant proposed to both of us and he showed us the numbers, and we said, yeah, we should probably do it,” Cheadle said at the premiere of his new film “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”
“It came up a lot of time,” he said about the topic of marriage. “But every time, we were like, ‘But we’re already together?’ [The accountant said], ‘Yeah, but this is a better reason to be together.'”
Cheadle and the 52-year-old actress and designer have two daughters named Ayana Tai, 2nd from right, and Imani, right.
Cheadle said the dopamine phase faded from their relationship a long time ago.
“Really, it’s because our accountant proposed to us, I wish there were some big sweet romantic story, but the romance happened, you know, the first year.”
