Photos of Pope Francis kissing the feet of young male inmates at a detention center are drawing mixed reactions. Partly because the pope broke from longstanding tradition and also kissed the feet of 2 women detainees as part of the pontiff’s Easter celebrations. The papal tradition of washing and kissing feet is usually reserved for kissing the feet of other male priests. Women have never been included in the papal tradition until Pope Francis’ era. Apparently Pope Francis has been routinely washing and kissing the feet of the poor and downtrodden for years.
