Darren Deon Vann began his killing spree two decades ago. Seven women went missing in Indiana during that time — and no one raised an eyebrow until Vann confessed to the murder of 19-year-old prostitute Afrika Hardy.
Hardy’s body was found in a Hammond Motel 6. She had been strangled to death. Hardy’s pimp gave police a description of the last person seen with Hardy. The tip led police to serve a search warrant on Vann’s home in Gary, where he was taken into custody.
Vann eventually confessed to killing Hardy. Then he led police to the bodies of six more women that Vann dumped in abandoned homes around Gary.
Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott announced an arrest in Hardy’s case on the city’s Facebook page.
“The suspect Hammond arrested for the Motel 6 murder is an admitted serial killer,” McDermott wrote. “The suspect gave up the location of a body in Gary that was confirmed found where he said it would be.”
McDermott added: “We would like to dispel the rumor that there is a serial killer on the loose. There is a 43-year-old man in the custody of The Hammond Police Department, who led officials to 3 deceased female victims who has claimed responsibility for their demise. Gary Police are closely working with Hammond Police to assist in covering every area of the investigation needed to pursue charges as expeditiously as possible.”
Vann would probably still be prowling the streets of Gary looking for more victims if the Hammond Police Dept. was as lax as Gary’s police department.
Vann reportedly told Hammond police he “messed up” by committing a crime in Hammond.
