The peaceful protests were just winding down when 4 gunshots rang out late Wednesday night in Ferguson, Missouri.
When the smoke cleared, 2 Ferguson police officers were on there ground suffering from gunshot wounds.
Minutes after the cops were shot, St. Louis Police Chief Jon Belmar stood before the TV cameras and attempted to link the shootings to the protestors. Belmar called the shootings “an ambush.” He said, “This is really an ambush, is what it is. You can’t see it coming. You don’t understand that it’s going to happen.”
The shootings occurred just hours after Tom Jackson reluctantly agreed to step down as chief of police following a scathing Department of Justice report on the Ferguson Police Department.
The two police officers received superficial flesh wounds to the face and shoulder. And despite CNN and other media outlets reporting the gunshot wounds as “serious,” both cops were released from the hospital less than 24 hours after they were shot.
According to outgoing Chief Jackson, the shots came from an area uphill about 125 yards from the protestors. This type of skill would require a high powered rifle with a scope fired by someone with precision training — such as a cop. But authorities immediately dismissed the rifle scenario.
Outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder condemned the “cowardly” shooter and called the wounded police officers “brave.” He wished the cops “a full and speedy recovery” and said the Justice Department would assist Ferguson authorities with the investigation.
The Department of Justice report was the result of a federal investigation into the police shooting death of teenager Michael Brown.
