A 9-year-old girl was mauled to death by a pit bull as she played in a backyard in Long Island over the weekend.
Amiyah Kayla Dunston was visiting her biological father when a pit bull named Kane charged at her around 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Amiyah was in the backyard playing with two girls — 8 and 9 — when she was attacked by the pit. Neighbors were unable to pull the dog off of her.
A next door neighbor said a doctor up the block tried to help the child. “He threw a garbage can at the dog, but he wouldn’t let her go,” said the neighbor.
“He was holding her somewhere on the side — I don’t know if it was the ears or the neck — and he was throwing her around like a rag doll,” the neighbor told The Post.
The pit bull’s owner, 29-year-old Carlyle Arnold was arrested on an unrelated charge on Monday. His bail was set at $10,000.
The girl’s distraught mother, Mayra Castillo, mourned the loss of her “princess” as she picked out funeral clothes for the child.
Castillo’s fiancé, Brian Willis, described Amiyah as “a phenomenal little girl” who “touched many lives with her presence, smiles and laughs.”
We thank you for all your support and prayers,” said Willis. “Just please let us mourn our terrible, tragic loss.”
Amiyah’s family set up an account on the Web site Go Fund Me asking for donations for her funeral and for grief counseling for themselves.
So far, more than $3,000 has been raised toward the family’s total goal of $15,000.

Not all Pits are bad but they are a unpredictable animal like almost every animal its in their nature. And the dog owners probably didnt have homeowners insurance or renters insurance so they can be sued. because they usually lie and say they dont have these dogs or they get mad because their bad credit and dangerous dog prevents them from being covered. If you have one of these dogs at least get some liability coverage PLEASE!! Ive seen so many insurance claims from kids being attacked or killed by dogs….its mind boggling.
many folks dont know the only and easilest way to get a pit off someone or a next dog is to use a stick or a pipe and pry open its draws from the back..

These dogs(pits) are dangerous and I am so sick of the owners saying that they are not. They are well known as the “escape artists” of the dog community so they will find a way out of their yard one day. They also have a killer instinct and ONLY respect the top dog which is generally the owner. They become even worse when they are reared outdoors instead of inside the home with the family and tend to resent children(especially new/unknown children) who some people believe the pit views as threats to their position in the family. My godchild’s father is a breeder and trainer and he swears that these types of attacks are a result of inbreeding and poor training BUT one of his dogs who does live in doors ALWAYS tries to use her body to push me around the house(herding me like a cow) every time I am in the house. He tells me to NEVER let her do it and get aggressive with her when she tries it. He doesn’t seem to think about what happens if I was a child or if he(the top dog) was not in the house when she does this. I HATE these dogs!

Sad story. My mother made my brother get rid of his pit like 2 weeks ago because it only growled at her and was kept outside. Also, sorry if this is too soon. Please take insurance out on your children. No one likes to talk about it but it’s necessary.
I ask anybody before I go in their house, if they hve pets. Tuah, friends or not I would never visit.
I also heard that you’re supposed to grab their hind legs and lift up. I don’t know how true that is, but I heard it.
My aunt was mauled and thankfully didn’t die. The owners did have insurance and my aunt settled for a decent amount. Money doesn’t take away the pain, scars or fears that she now has and will likely have forever.

I drive by this home that has 2 HUGE grey pits in the yard. These pits have muscles on top of muscles, SWOLLEN. Each one must weigh over 100 lbs. Every time I pass I think what would happen if they got out that gate, SMH. Anyone walking by wouldn’t have a chance.

He has 20+ dogs total and hires them/sells them out for security firms. People who have no fear of dogs often are nonchalant about them. I can’t tell you how many times a rottweiler or German shepard has come padding up to me in the living room. And my god baby just running with them like he in the Jungle Book. The entire family has voiced our concerns and so now he has the kennels at a separate location and (supposedly) only the pit lives in the house. But to me that is the worst risk because of the manner in which the pit attacks, it’s a death attack not a bite and release.

I really like the concept of GFM and I have been asked and have contributed to some good causes (my god brother’s senior class trip, my friend’s mission trip to Peru, some lady whose story I read about in the paper), but it does seem that there is a GFM attached to every story you hear about. Irresponsible pet owners kill me. We don’t need animal bans, need prosecution for owners whose animal attack. We need mandatory training for ANYONE with a dog. Restrictions on breeders etc.
My animals are all properly trained and socialized. My animals go nowhere without me and wearing a muzzle, from the littles to the bigs. Any aggressive behavior is retrained (growling while eating, growling toward someone who is clearly invited and non aggressive with me etc). I hate when dog owners think it’s cute when they have a dog that won’t let anyone near them. In those cases your dog is the leader not you. You dog is telling you, no one else is allowed in my pack.

I’m not against that breed. I think they are majestic animals. It is the humans they become involved with and the humans cannot be trusted. License, insurance, expensive to have, face lawsuits if they attack all intended to keep the humans in check.
I think these public funds should have the family list the costs of what they will need because some people do take advantage. Although circumstances differ, funerals should be no more than $10K. Some funeral homes may provide services at no cost when it involves children. The parents need to list projected counseling costs and length of time they would be attending.

My dog was attacked by a pit. The vet told me plainly, “pits are aggressive breeds. They could have very well been playing…even their play style is aggressive.” I’m not a fan of pits at all. Combine their aggressive nature with the general inability to stop them once an attack has commenced…disaster waiting to happen.
I think they are beautiful dogs, but we can’t handle them. There is always a heartbreaking story. I suggested breed specific legislation but then we’ll hear about Rottweilers and Mastiffs and the next one. The problem is people.

As the owner of dogs…I have been involved TWICE in vicious attacks upon my dog(s), with so called “domesticated” pit bulls. My lil 10lb poodle mix STILL bears the scars from those two attacks. The first attack traumatized her so badly…that she literally howled all that night.
Those pits instinctively attack to maim/kill. Please don’t come at me with contradicting “data” or “bedside opinions”, because I’m speaking from what I’ve experienced/witnessed PERSONALLY! (The first attack was by TWO pits, so I’ve seen 3 of these
petsanimals, up close..& in full effect.) So no “study” that folks google… can tell ME what I went thru.I don’t care how “well handled/trained” people prefer to think a pit bull is..you can’t “train” a dog not to submit to its’ natural instinct. If you could, there would be NO incidents of them attacking innocent victims/other animals.
I see pit bulls all the time in our subdivision..with their owners holding their leashes all lax & carefree… like they’re teacup poodles. I immediately tense up..and head in another direction. I remember when I was a little girl and we could never have dogs and it was always BECAREFUL ,my mom sincerely did not trust dogs. To name the specific ones we had to watch out for were Dobermans, Rotts, German Sheperds and MOST of ALL and I
MEAN most of all was PITTBULLS. Of course being young I wanted a dog maybe one not big and “faroius” but a cute little doggie woggie?? Any was I was 10 years old and my class mate Chris Floyd – never will forget. Came to school with his left cheek seen up 50 stitches on the inside and 60 on the out. His Doberman pincher bit his face because he thought he was taking his food. Imagine the small and oval mouth a Doberman had – it was identical on his cheek. He said it was just hanging there bleeding.
Good grief. Rest in peace baby girl. I know all animals are capable of snapping but it seems certain ones are more prone. I know pit bull owners have the whole “don’t bully my breed” thing going but they do seem more naturally over aggressive than other breeds. One of my neighbors has one that was NEVER on the leash. Always talking about how harmless he was. Another neighbor called the police on him when that dog ran up on him one too many times.

She was sick (kidneys) for years and REFUSED to handle any legalities with her or her child. Left a mess for my family to clean up. She thought that if she did, her death would come quicker. Please think of family because anything can happen is my advice to all. I’ve learned so much in my 27 years and I’m ALWAYS the go to person for just about everybody. I done shut ish down! Staffordshires and Mastiff are registered breeds sir/mam and have less propensity for violence than what we seem to see from pits. Although the dog credited with the most attacks in the US is the Chihuahua I think, I still think it is negligent to act like pitbulls have not ended several people’s lives.

I’m a dog person too and have a stubborn Mal to contend with. I am with these dogs daily, training and correcting their behaviour, no abuse though.
But I’m not going to sit here and say my dog is sweet and innocent because I know what he is capable of.
He could seriously hurt a small child. He could. And I can preach all the good things about him all day, but it don’t change the fact that he is capable of doing great harm.
And why did it take the doctor up the street to do that much? Where is dad, and why is a not yet to be stepdad making statements?
It is true about vets. I was once tempted to lay hands on one when I found out (from another vet) my dog had EPI and all he had tried to do was sell me expensive dog food knowing damn full well my baby’s broken pancreas wouldn’t be able to digest that crap either!

The attacks happened so fast…yet it felt like it was in slow motion. That’s why I said, you really have NO time to think. Even the 2nd time…since it was yrs later…I was caught off guard & the pit came from behind us, before I knew it..he had grabbed her. So picture me trying to pull one dog from the pits’ deadly jaws, trying to protect myself and my other dog, yelling for help..& trying to pull pepper spray out ..all at the same time.
And even if there had been a pipe..or anything else around, (which there was not…I was in a subdivision, not an industrial lot), I wouldn’t have seen it! I was crying and screaming..my only thought was “For God’s sake don’t fall down…that pit could grab you by your neck…try to stay on your feet.”
And although it may sound good in theory…lemme tell you..to get your hands around a lunging predators neck, or even wedge anything in it’s mouth…is just that..theory. Those animals are STRONG, especially when they are in “attack” mode.

My boxer was playing with a pit and things started to go left, i quickly got him out of there. Im not fan of pits but this one was fat and cute and a lil friendly and the owner assured me he was ok to play with. My point is they may seem like their trained but something triggers them and things go south real quick.

I have many different animals/dogs. I don’t put it past ANY of them to hurt someone. Because at the end of the day they are animals, they all have some sort of aggressiveness (even goldfish will fight and kill each other for land sakes). To label this one animal breed as aggressive or a bully is asisnine because they ALL are.
My animals are all well trained but I still take precautions when they are in the general public. My cocker wears a muzzle, my collie wears a muzzle, my mutt (some sort of terrier) wears a muzzle, my child is not allowed to take any of my animals out without me right there. Our Schnauzer growing up was the dog killing rabbits and squirrels and bringing them to the porch, while our fox Terrier (the “aggressive” one) wanted no parts of it. A dog is a dog regardless of breed, and will be aggressive towards other animals instinctively and aggressive towards humans if trained….

I have seen this used once when a dog attacked another dog and would not let go of its snout. The owner was beating the attacking dog with a stick and his fists everywhere, it did nothing. Finally an old man saw what was going on and did the thing with its hind legs, the dog let go immediately.

This is the second case I know of where the child was mauled to death while having visitation with their father. People just refuse to accept the true nature of these dogs. Why not just lock the dog up when visitors are over? What a tragedy.

And they need to stop training a dog to be aggressive when it is already in their bloodline. I had pits and never had any problems with them. For one, I knew I didn’t need to train an already aggressive dog to be aggressive and two most times the training that people do is straight animal abuse. This is so sad, RIP to this baby.

I agree somewhat, as I know not everyone can afford insurance, but even a grandparent can get life insurance these days. I have insurance on my children and grands and even my children’s fathers. My mother had it on her children and grandchildren. And my grandmother had it on her children. And we are far from rich. I am all for helping in times of need, but at some point, people have to start preparing for the worse and pray for the best. I will gladly forgo a nail appointment and pay my grandbabies’ insurance if I have to.

I hope not everyone who does a GoFundMe account gets rip to shreds, however I do want people to become more conscious about taking care of their families and lives and start researching life insurance, etc. It is hard enough to have to bury your baby, and then to have to rely on the kindness of others to help get your child laid to rest has to add additional stress. I talk to all of my younger family members about this and tell them, I am more than willing to help in times of need, but let’s try and prepare for them, as well.

I put my dog in the kennel in the house if I’m going to have unfamiliar guest in my home or in the back yard. This eliminates any contact with strangers. Also my dog is trained to protect my babies and not bark at kids, which is something I’ve done with all 4 of them (pittbulls). So they don’t bark or snap at my babies, they do stay very close to them if I leave the room. My two year old feeds the dog right out of her hands and there has never been an incident. Pittbulls are actually very smart dogs it’s just the owners that make them into vicious weapons, which I don’t condone at all.
