A prosecutor will ask for the maximum penalty for former Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III at his DUI trial.
The Raiders released Ruggs from his contract on Tuesday, hours after he was involved in a fatal DUI crash that left a female motorist and her dog dead.
Ruggs, 22, was driving at more than 150 mph with a blood-alcohol level twice Nevada’s legal limit when his Chevrolet Corvette crashed into the back of a Toyota RAV4.
The impact and fireball killed a 23-year-old woman and her dog, a prosecutor said Wednesday.
The Toyota was fully engulfed in flames by the time emergency responders arrived.
Ruggs and his passenger, Kiara Je’nai Kilgo-Washington, 22, with whom he has a baby daughter, were treated at a hospital with “serious” but non-life-threatening injuries.
A loaded gun was found in his car, prosecutors say.
Ruggs was booked into a Las Vegas jail and appeared in court on Wednesday with his attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld. He wore a neck brace and was in a wheelchair after suffering a hip fracture in the crash.
He was not asked to enter a plea to the charges, pending the formal filing of charges by Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson, according to NFL.com.
Prosecutor Eric Bauman said air bag computer data showed the Corvette slowed from 156 mph to 127 mph before it collided with the Toyota.
Judge Joe M. Bonaventure said he could not recall crash case involving a speed that high since he became a judge.
The prosecutor plans to throw the book at Ruggs who faces a maximum of 20 years in state prison.
