Another celebrity has irked The Gays without really meaning to. It doesn’t take much to irk the gays these days. No celebrity is safe from gay groups who decide that even an innocent cartoon posted on a Facebook page is anti-gay. The latest celebrity target is former NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal.
On Wednesday, O’Neal posted a seemingly innocuous cartoon strip on his Facebook page of two men standing close together at urinals in a public restroom. The cartoon strip shows one man at the bank of urinals who is eventually joined by another man who chooses the urinal right next to his.
Initially the post attracted lighthearted comments from men who routinely observe polite urinal etiquette. But almost immediately the gay brigade took offense at user comments such as the ones analyzing the stride of the 2nd man.
“Glad to know you like to start hate dialogue against gay people shaq just lost a fan here,” one perturbed user wrote.
Another Facebook user noted that the 2nd man in Shaq’s cartoon was “depicted striding in a swishy manner.” Others agreed, “[You] can tell hes gay by the way he walkin in the middle pic,” the commenter noted.
One Facebook user named Towleroad, who is assumed to be gay, wrote:
“Though he may have not intended it, the post, which points out a common men’s room faux pas avoided by straight and gay men alike, has encouraged and produced hateful dialogue against the latter.”
Another user jumps to the ridiculous conclusion that Shaq’s intent was to spark anti-gay sentiments. “Glad to know you like to start hate dialogue against gay people shaq just lost a fan here,” the user wrote.
The insensitive of the gays is astounding. Their ability to turn every celebrity statement or action into a cause célèbre for gay rights is particularly annoying and divisive.
As black people, we continue to be subjected to subtle and overt acts of racism daily, but we don’t take offense at every perceived slight. As gays, our inability to make light of a cartoon gives power to those who hate us.
