Odd Future singer/songwriter Frank Ocean made a powerful statement of courage and when he came flying out of the closet earlier this week. The 24-year-old music producer — who is responsible for Beyonce’s hit song “I Miss You” — wrote a long, poignant letter on his Tumblr page describing his unrequited love for another man.
Some industry insiders believe Frank Ocean was struggling with his affections for fellow producer Kanye West. It’s worth noting that the industry has rallied together with unflinching support for Ocean, but Kanye, who is Ocean’s mentor, is surprisingly quiet.
“I Miss You” off Beyonce’s fourth studio album, 4 (released June 24 2011) was written by Frank Ocean and Shea Taylor (they reportedly added Bey’s songwriting credit later).
The lyrics in “I Miss You” are eerily similar to the touching words in Ocean’s letter. (I took the liberty of highlighting the similarities for you.)
One line in particular — “It hurt my pride to tell you how I feel” — sounds identical to what Ocean wrote in his letter.
“I sat there and told my friend how I felt. I wept as the words left my mouth. I grieved for them, knowing I could never take them back… He patted my back. He said kind things. He did his best, but he wouldn’t admit the same…
Do you think Ocean wrote “I Miss You” for Kanye?

I thought that things like this get better with time
But I still need you, why is that?
You’re the only image in my mind
So I still see you… around
[Chorus]
I miss you like everyday
Wanna be with you, but you’re away
Said I miss you, missing you insane
But if I got with you, could it feel the same?
Words don’t ever seem to come out right
But I still mean them, why is that?
It hurt my pride to tell you how I feel
But I still need to, why is that?
[Repeat Chorus]
It don’t matter who you are
It is so simple, a feeling
But it’s everything
No matter who you love
It is so simple, a feeling
But it’s everything
[Repeat Chorus]
It don’t matter who you are
It is so simple, a feeling
But it’s everything
No matter who you love
It is so simple, a feeling
But it’s everything
