Solange Knowles

Solange Knowles' new album When I Get Home dropped like a sack of wet sand last night. Beyonce's little sister surprised her fans by teasing her new album on Black Planet this week.

Solange's tweet, "Find me on Black Planet," left many of her older fans struggling to remember our logins.

Solange promised to deliver her new album at midnight. It was worth losing sleep to listen to 19 new tracks from the musician who gave us the masterful A Seat At the Table, which landed at #1 on the Billboard chart and earned Solo her first Grammy in 2016.

Unfortunately, WIGH failed to impress Solo's fans who were expecting a lot more than music as artful noise.

The set features rappers Playboi Carti, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, Gucci Mane, and more - but not much of a contribution from the singer herself.

"I'm on song 10 and she has yet to sing," wrote one disappointed fan. "...like I get she is into a "contextualized high-art" form of singing but give me lyrical content that isn’t a repetitive melody and singing that’s flows with emotion and less tracks that are overpowered by monotone adult swim vibes."

What the hell did I just listen to?...Sandra, 1 Rose is way too generous. I give that half of a thorn.

  • WinterIsComing

It is straight trash. I think she made it while high on acid. Idk wtf she’s talking about. The vocals are weak as expected but it was tolerated in her last album bc the lyrics spoke to me. It is an album full of ad libs. I am so disappointed bc “A Seat at the Table” got me through 2018.

  • Renee26

She sounded high as a kite

  • WinterIsComing

Agreed! And I listened to the entire album to see if it was going to get somewhere else but it didn’t!

  • http://yourpushfactor.com/ Sheila Makena

The album isn't for everyone. I'm pretty sure she knows that.

  • Mr.LeBrickJames

"...surprised her fans by teasing her new album on Black Planet this week."
    --------------
People still go to Black Planet?

  • Renee26

Sounds like she wrote Bey's versus on the Carters...

  • Renee26

I had to turn it off at 2.22

  • WinterIsComing

The thing is, she’s a very gifted writer. I just don’t know what happened with this album.

  • Renee26

Yeah keep that ish behind the scenes

  • WinterIsComing

???? it’s also on Apple Music

  • MsVAllDay

Black Planet?? TF I didn't even know it was still out. Won't even try to figure out a login from 1998. GTFOH

That shyt she singing up top is ridiculous! She needs to take her arse home with this silly shyt.

  • Gloria

I heard that Solange recently purchased Black Planet. People are showing interest in it again since she owns it now.

  • iWasteTime

If you've not vibed to her her music before today, you won't all of a sudden.
She's ALWAYS been ahead of her time and a whole wave on her own.
The album has has been out 7.5 hrs ans already a dud?

  • Yoni7

"Find me on Black Planet," left many of her older fans struggling to remember our logins.

Good thing her B00ty shaking Sister is richer than Country Butter
Therefore Solange can hit and miss all she want to...

  • MrsSpice1

seen one rose ?...lol damn, i cant even listen to it now. I like some of solange old stuff but im not interested in anything new from her..?????

  • Faithz

    Lord bless her soul.

  • AmericanDream

She’s trying too hard to come across as edgy, super artsy , and avant garde . Let’s face it she’s as forgettable as bubble gum, she’s not even an average vocalist nor songwriter . This woman is a poseur at best or a wanna-be at worse

There was nothing wrong with becoming an elementary school teacher Solange , just because one member of the family has made it big in one area doesn’t mean it will or must automatically rub off on you . I always wondered , had Beyoncé become a doctor would Solange had gone to med school too ?

  • MsSapphire9800

No...they did a correction...she created a profile on Black Planet.

  • BingBangBoom

I can hear this song already playing on a episode of Atlanta or Insecure.. lol
Happy Friday.. We made it yall.. Turn up!

  • AmericanDream

    Large fan base ...... LOL

  • MsSapphire9800

Black Planet...I haven't heard anything about that site since 2002...did not know they still exist...Well good luck Solange...

  • Faithz

Often time she act like she's in a very dark place
    in her own life.

  • Alextra Ballard

Chiiile No!! Even her most diehard fans can’t approve this foolishness

    I dont want it.

    The end.

  • Mr.LeBrickJames

Three years since your last album, and this is the best you can do? Sorry, this is lame.
    One star would be generous.

  • sunni_daze

    Nope. I'm good, luv

  • casiepriest33

Sandra stop, this album is great. I stayed up just to listen. You're the ultimate hater. Shyt is sad.

  • Bossy704

The music is beautiful. If you consider it instrumental it's pretty good.

  • Music

The verdict is still out on this album. I have to listen to it again. I fell asleep during the first listen.

  • Renee Bee

    Sweet Memories...

  • Whiplash(lacejagger)

She wants to be an oddity soooo bad.

  • Mr.LeBrickJames

Wow. That was harsh... but real.

  • Ebony Starr

    Yikes!!!

  • Mr.LeBrickJames

Straight up trash. I'm always annoyed when artists take years to come up their next album, then it turns out to be garbage. If she'd put her head down and grinded hard with some good songwriters and producers, she could have come up with something way better than this. This here is a waste of time.

  • Pamela

In this photo one really sees the Native American genes in Solange. She must be commended for doing her own thing without piggybacking on her sister.

  • WinterIsComing

    Agreed.

  • Applebum

Lol Black planet. BP was the ish. Who remembers Migente? They tried, lol.

I don’t care about no damn Solange but I’ll take her over the other...

I did play the video, I kind of like that song. It’s different.

  • WinterIsComing

And I like weirdos-Badu, Childish Gambino, Sia, Hozier, Miguel, DVSN, HER, Daniel Caesar...But this album right here, NO BUENO.

  • Applebum

All she did was filtered/darkened the picture. And a long weave. Native American where? ?

  • Harley

Crazy how you pulled up all the negativity and not ALL the accolades she is getting

  • Yardgirl

OMG I am a new fan due to him being on and winning The Masked Singer. That man can SING!!

  • Yardgirl

I had to Google that word, lol. I think it’s natural for her. She’s been like that since she started her music career.

  • Kayke

I’m annoyed at how fast people name albums “classics” or “flops”. Give the music some time. Ish grows on people. I can see not liking a song but an entire body of work needs more than 24 hours to dissect. Ive seen folks change their whole tune after multiple plays or watches of something.

  • Whiplash(lacejagger)

No mam.. you must don’t remember her when she was a back up dancer for Destinys Child? If you’re an oddity it’s just that.. solange tries to be odd... big difference!

  • IyanlaVanzantoftheInterWebs

She may have just settled on being Man Beater lol. i'm on my second round of listening bc i had to pick my troop up this morning. but i mean, solo has never given us similar albums back to back. Lmfao ikr! Solange is one of the most overrated artists of ANY time ?. That woman hasn’t dropped a solid album worth listening to since Hadley streeet dreams or w/e it was called. That was her best album and even that was slightly above mediocre. This last one that everyone raves about A Seat at the Table was wack. It just wasn’t good at all imo

  • ClaireHuxtable

Solo izzzz...different. *it must be really hard being Bey's little sister*

  • ClaireHuxtable

You're welcome. The $50 bills are in the middle.

  • Kanyade

I'm listening. The song is mellow. The song is....a mastered, impromptu session in the studio?

She's playing to (some of) the music representing the culture now. The talk-singing, the the lyrics that at first seem banal but oh, wait! there's more! it's deep. nah, for real, it is DEEP. listen again.

Meh. If'n she like it, her fans will deal. lol

    Happy Friday, y'all.

  • Yardgirl

    ???

  • T Willis

Ahead of her time or not, this industry is a business. Solange isn’t likeable or immensely talented. So she’d better work on that f*cked up personality of hers and join the land of the civil and sane. Or she’ll be paying out of her own pockets to finance this garbage she calls music, while touring laundry mats over the country.

  • Pamela

You lost me at "had Beyonce become a doctor".???

  • BingBangBoom

That's how I'm dancing today... lol

  • Carrington

I wish people stop with the "surprise" albums. Beyoncé did it and it can't be redone unless someone is anticipating it.
Surprise albums from people who sell a combined total of 100,000 units over three years is like your best friend's OTHER best friend that you just tolerate showing up at your house talking about, "Surprise!!".. I mean... hey.

  • T Willis

    ?

  • Coy little wink

    Ayyyyeeee!!!

  • Carrington

Solange's problem is that she WANTS to be deep real real bad and it never comes across as authentic, to me. She has tried EVERY single genre of music and this "earthy" schtick is the only one that's stuck and gave her a semblance of success... but she's taking THAT to the extreme.
When she first came out, she was trying an R&B infused hip hop... Nobody was cutting for it. Then she tried pop... nobody was cutting for it... then the Amy Winehouse's and Duffy's were doing their thing with that 60's sound and she tried that... dust.
She went with this earth child thing after her wedding and people started to connect a little after those bomb wedding pictures and then she was suddenly a deep, incense lighting, afro wearing, "I don't give a fuk-er" and people were like, "OK... let's give her a chance."
Now this. I still haven't been motivated to buy an album, but I've bought a single. I think she should do some music that people might actually LISTEN to. I don't see myself riding in the car to this, or putting it on when my friends come by (as IF them mfs gettin' in my house), or playing it at the club. This is the kind of music you play when you're depressed and thinking about ending it all. Music to usher you into the next phase hymnals. Aaaah... I'm cool.

I love Solo and find her vibes and inspirations to be authentic. I don't believe she's trying to be deep, but has the luxury of getting to create at her leisure and be authentic to herself/her art and doesn't spoon feed a message in the name of the lowest common denominators understanding.

Like... a Capricorn type of person can vibe to some Solange or similar as background music after a long day of conquering their profession, but doesn't even use the parts of the brain an artist does so the art is not made for them to actually feel. That probably sounds like nonsense talk but I get it, and I get why everyone doesn't.

Was she openly Beyonce's creative director in the last few eras? Or is that Melina?

  • Miss Lady

This sounds like they were sitting around drinking and getting high and someone recorded the foolishness of it all.

  • leapyearpisces

The only reason she went with the "earthy" shtick is because if she DARE tried to do the R&B / Pop thing, that she would be compared to B everytime she thought about putting out a record, so to avoid that (she did habe minor tries at it), she went the faux noveau neo soul route. This is where the "ugly ducklings" or the siblings that were born without the overall mojo mess up, even if I would have the same passion for the same art form, I would have to go the other way, and let the artform be my hobby. In other words, if I was Solange, you all would know me as Beyonce''s billion dollar CEO sister that owns billon dillar companies that sings karaoke at the local lounge on the weekend (when time permits).

  • JENNYJONES1

SOOOOO SHE DID ALL OF THAT SHOWING HER ASS ON A POLE FOR NOTHING. SMH.........JENNY JONES!!!

Facts. I can always rock with erykah, and lauryn but solo (as she now calls herself) could’ve come a lot harder with this. I can’t even smoke and LIKE this. Maybe I should switch up strands?

  • Carrington

I don't think doing R&B would necessarily get her compared to Beyoncé because BEYONCE doesn't do R&B. I don't know WTF she's doing. When you're the sister of the biggest singer in the country and you're also a singer, you're going to get compared if you do hair and she sings. So, my thing is - do some good MUSIC to stop the comparisons.
Beyoncé has enough connections to ask some good producers to help her sister with some songs and she'll do a song with them in the future as payback. That's how her father got Solange the little bit of name she has. He used Beyoncé as leverage to kick down doors for Solange.
Janet was able to do it. She was the sister of the biggest star on EARTH and ended up being the SECOND biggest star at one point. If Beyoncé is #1, Solange can EASILY get to #217 if she put in the work.

  • Gloria

Update: Listened to the first three songs. It was unbearable.

I never got into this chicks music or her stupid style. She has maybe 2 songs I like from the album she did years ago. I think in 08 with the old 60 or 70’s vibe. I never even bothered to listen to A seat at the table either.
To me her who style she ripped off from Erykah Badu. When Solo first came out she was trying do to pop like her sister but Rihanna came out and over shadowed her so she had to find another lane.

  • mzwhang90210
  • mzwhang90210
  • Rhyme and Reason

The music or instrumentals were pretty good! I have to listen to the whole album a couple of times, to see if I could put this on replay!

The sound is not knew, ERYKAH BADU and Amel Larrieux does it, or even Q-Tip (A Tribe Name Quest), Miles Davis jazzz fusion era!

I can see why some people are disappointed, they wanted singing (not spoken word to music), but she’ll also convert some fans to listen to jazz, I hope!

The younger millennials missed the “smooth jazz” era, when just about all of Janet Jackson’s big songs were turned into jazz instrumentals!

We’ve been pigeon-holed to hip hop, and the same style R&B female artists like H.E.R., Sza, Ella Mai, Zhene Aiko (wonderful artists) etc.!

But, unlike the 90s and 2000s from Brandy, Monica, Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, Sade, Mariah, Janet, MJB, Lil’. Kim, Beyoncé, Jill Scott, India Arie, Erykah, or Rihanna there was more diversity!

  • Yardgirl

    Thanks luvie!!???????

  • Shira Harding-James

Just like most artist, they have no creative rights. I don’t think she is a knock- off of Ms Badu, they don’t even sound alike or have the same sound

  • Michael Jenkins

    very disappointed

  • Mikayla

Thank you! A Seat at the Table was so damn wack. Every song sounded the same. Are you a fan of her sister's? Because Lemonade was wack too.The one thing the two of them have in common Is being overrated.

  • Mikayla

I can't see either of them in any kind of classroom.

  • Mikayla

This is why I never could stand Solange. I'll never forget an interview she did in which she said "I can't even f**k with you if your shoe game ain't tight." Like, what? You can only afford the level of wardrobe you have because you're Beyonce's sister. She hasn't worked for anything! She would never have a chance in music if not for Beyonce (who's overrated too but at least she built her career, worked hard, and has fans).

No one can pigeonhole an Artist to anything! An Artist has free will to make the music one chooses. No one is holding a gun to their heads. They are plenty of Black Artists that make a variety of music in different genres. You have to actually put in the work of seeking these artists out. To say Black Artists are pigeonholed to only hip hop and R&B is ridiculous in 2019.

  • Rhyme and Reason

I agree, there are MANY, but they don’t receive promotion, EXPOSURE, and visibility! I hear more diversity of artists on SiriusXM!

I used to write for an entertainment newspaper, blog, and saw so many talented artists, press-kits, listening parties, music showcases, etc., heartbreaking!

But, what or who becomes musical superstars or able to reach the masses is a very narrow collection, IMO!

I worked with high school students in after school programs or the projects, we would take the kids to listen to jazz and world music artists, and they loved it. I would play music, while we worked on projects, and the kids always wanted to know “who is that?”

Music is a universal language, and has healing and soothing effects or the opposite! Radio is corporate with a redundant playlist, and doesn’t choose to break new black artists!

  • SunSoy

Artists of ALL races and ethnicities have a hard time breaking through not just Black Artists. Who becomes a global superstar is narrow regardless of the race of the Artist. Artists have to come up with ways to promote and sell themselves.

Relying on the record company to do everything and the blame game and using the race card is lame.

Its 2019 Black people have ALWAYS listened and made all genres of music. The notion Black Artists are forced to do certain types of music is lame.

Well, I certainly get what you’re saying, and making it without high-powered machine promotion and publicity isn’t impossible, and good luck to anyone who tries!

I know working musicians and singers who earn a good living performing for clubs, private gigs, festivals, on cruise ships, and travel around the globe. They build a fan base and make albums, and sell their music at performances and online, at a tremendous profit, as independent artists!

Then you have YouTube Channels and Social Media that can possibly catapult an artist into superstardom or create a lucrative revenue stream by monetizing!

Also, having a good publicist can build an artist brand locally, nationally, and internationally!

But, many or SOME artists want to be signed by a major record label, then try to make music that is radio-friendly, reach a certain demo, go for making “hits,” often discouraged from doing the music they would really like to do! It’s a choice, NOT mandatory!

We do have Beyoncé, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj, Jill Scott, Erykah, Marsha, India Ari, Janelle, Solange, SZA, H.E.R., Sevyn, Ella Mai, and some others!
