A Cincinnati cop will be charged with murder in the shooting death of Samuel Dubose, 43. Officer Ray Tensing shot and killed Dubose during an altercation following a traffic stop earlier this month.
Prosecutor Joseph Deters announced a warrant for Tensing’s arrest during a news conference on Wednesday.
“I’m treating him like a murderer,” Deters said. “This was the purposeful killing of another person.”
Tensing stopped Dubose on July 19 near the University of Cincinnati’s campus, police said, because Dubose was driving a car with license plate on the front.
The officer “wasn’t dealing with someone who was wanted for murder,” Deters said. “He was dealing with someone without a front license plate.”
THe city is bracing for violence after footage from Tensing’s body camera was released to the local media today.
Deters said he was “shocked” when he saw the video.
“I have been doing this for 30 years,” he said. “This is the most asinine act I have ever seen a police officer make.”
He added: “It’s just bad. It’s just bad what he did and it shouldn’t have happened.”
Deters described the traffic stop as a “chicken-crap stop.”
“I could have used harsher words,” he said.
EDIT: In an earlier version of this post, I described the altercation between Dubose and Tensing based on the events described by ABC News. It isn’t clear if ABC News viewed the video prior to publishing their version of the altercation before Dubose was shot.
After watching the video myself, I deleted ABC’s version of the altercation as it clearly conflicts with what I saw in the video.

But there was an excuse for the cop to m u r d e r Sandra Bland??? Hmmm — I “smell” lots of hypocrisy esp. among the Black males posting here. The same ones claiming that Sandra Bland brought her d e a t h on herself because, of her “flip mouth” are coming to this Brotha’s defense when it’s clear that he brought his d e a t h on himself. This Brotha shouldn’t have been shot in the head – ABSOLUTELY HE SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN however, why didn’t he just comply with the officer and step out of the car instead of trying to prevent the cop from opening the door? It’s because, that Brotha didn’t have his driver’s license and he knows he this, thus him trying to keep the cop from opening his door. Sadly, this Brotha brought this upon himself due to his actions………..
This shooting bothers me, because the blame isn’t black and white.
To a civilian, this was a routine traffic stop and legally, that’s precisely what it was.
However, for a police officer, there is no such thing as a routine traffic stop, because the situation can turn on a dime at any second.
I watched this video ten times. The driver made a lot of poor choices, choices that cost him his life.
When the officer asked for his license, he should have simply said, “I don’t have my license with me, sir.”
Instead of telling the truth, the driver lied.
When you lie to a cop, it makes them nervous, and a nervous cop is a dangerous cop.
The situation escalated when the cop asked the driver to remove his seatbelt.
Again, instead of obeying the cop’s order, the driver reached for his door and the ignition, simultaneously, prompting the already spooked cop to fire his weapon.
I’m not going to speculate about what was going on in the officer ‘s mind, but when you have a split second to defend yourself, fatal mistakes are sometimes made.

This is my lovely city….and the cop lied! Were in the video did you see the cop being dragged? My question is this……What is a UC cop doing off campus? Im thinking you patrol THE CAMPUS….why you in the city making a traffic stop for a missing front plate? I have a new found respect for Joe Deters….he said it all. The black guy goes for the keys in the ignition, turns the car on and revs the gas. He is then shot in the head.. You can hear is brick foot step on the gas and floor it.

Another totally phucked situation, and this man should never have died over not having a front tag but you have to know you can’t make sudden movements with cops, hands in plain sight at all times. Yes sir no sir, and keep it moving, like one poster wrote the old adage applies, live to fight another day. I have been pulled over by dickheaded cops for throwing a cigarette butt out the window have been arrested and called a gook and a chink by a bigot cop at 17 yrs old because they couldn’t get the real culprit. As an adult I’ve learned to be objective and see the bigger picture, every traffic stop is a gamble. The majority of cops were okay and even empathetic, even had a cool ass officer who went well out of his way and used to give me and my skipping friends rides home or back to school in HS. He could have took us to juvey. But he didn’t, he even gave us food if we were hungry. We can’t control how others act but we can control how we act. My heart bleeds for every life lost. There seems to be some sort of agenda in pitting race against race in this day and age, civilians against law enforcement, look to who controls the media, controls the world. We are up in arms now over the constant cop shootings but I wonder what the verdict will be if martial law is in effect, and being soldiers, killings would be justified and no prosecution.
