2 Live Crew founding member Fresh Kid Ice, pictured right, passed away from an unknown medical condition on Thursday at a Miami hospital, his rep confirmed. The rapper, whose real name is Chris Wong Won, was 53.

Fresh Kid formed 2 Live Crew with fellow members DJ Mr. Mixx and Amazing Vee in California in 1984.

In 1985, the group moved to Miami without Vee. Mark Ross, aka Brother Marquis, pictured left, and Luther Campbell later joined the crew.

Campbell courted controversy with his sexually suggestive lyrics and his infringement of the name “Luke Skywalker”, from the movie franchise Star Wars.

Noted for being the first rapper of Asian decent, Fresh Kid Ice is the only 2 Live Crew member to appear on all the group’s albums, and also discovered the rapper Flo Rida, according to WENN.com.

The 2 Live Crew also hit the headlines in 1990, when their record As Nasty As They Wanna Be was declared obscene by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida making it the first to be legally declared obscene. The ruling was later overturned by a higher court.

In 1988, the late rapper was involved in a near fatal car accident resulting in a loss of mobility in his left arm, he also suffered from strokes in 2009 and 2010, but recovered his ability to walk and speak.
