Beverage company marketing racism?

51

Is the Arizona beverage company boldly marketing racism and bragging about it on urban message boards? Judge for yourselves:

My name is LaMar McGowan and today was the first day of my life were I Felt like less of a Black Man! When did Slavery become marketable? I’m Calling for a nation wide Boycott on a drink company named “Arizona” which has a variety of flavors. I myself have bought a number of their drinks, but on 11/30 I bought my last one.

There is someone in the marketing dept. who told someone on the board that, “We can degrade black people and make money at the same time,” – and the board member agreed!

Every Black person from the south knows how good it felt on those hot southern days to have a tall glass of sweet tea. “Arizona” has a flavor known as Southern Style Sweet Tea.” But if you look closely on the front of the can, there is a picture of a Plantation!

Yes, I said a Plantation, with a white couple on the porch and a Black woman dressed like Aunt Jemima walking away from the house. When did slavery become marketable?

My Grandfather was 100 years old before he passed in 2004 and that picture reminds me of his very few but painful story’s not a hot southern day with a cool refreshing glass of sweet tea. So stop buying any drinks from this company!

Stand up and let your voice be heard & overload their lines. 1-800-832-3775.

On Thursday, February 14, 2008, the hottest showdown of stars on and off the court took place at the 2008 “Boost Mobile Zo & Magic’s 8-Ball Challenge,” held during NBA All-Star Weekend. NBA All-Star Alonzo Mourning of the Miami Heat and NBA Legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson teamed up with Title Sponsor Boost Mobile, presenting Sponsor G2 from the makers of Gatorade, and Official Vehicle Sponsor Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., for this year’s challenge, now in its fourth year. Hosted by Grammy winner Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, the annual 8-Ball Challenge is one of All-Star Weekend’s most popular events, raising more than $750,000 to date to support youth and community causes. This year’s challenge has adopted New Orleans own, West Jefferson High School, a school in many ways still crippled by its needs and the impact of Hurricane Katrina. Proceeds from the event will assist the school in opening a new computer lab for its students. (Source)

Keyshia Cole made it a perfect Valentine’s day for fans who packed Dreamz nightclub for her platinum party last night. Keyshia performed all her hits and left the crowd screaming for more. Keyshia’s mom and sisters joined her on stage for the concert and afterwards, Keyshia led everyone up to the VIP to continue the party.

Also performing at Keyshia’s platinum party were Plies, Peach Candy, Big Boi and JC from Block Entertainment. NFL star Pac Man was in the house, but understandably, he wasn’t taking pics.

My photographer Freddyo said Keyshia was so nice to him and allowed him to take exclusive shots of her brand new $250,000 Ferrari – a gift from her future hubby Jeezy maybe?

I must admit I wasn’t feeling keyshia’s new hair color but I love the color and cut in these pics. She looks beautiful! The party was hosted by Mz Shyneka and Hot 107.9.

Janet Jackson wins NAACP award

Before I can even get my day started good, the Janet Jackson fans are already whining and complaining because I didn’t mention that Janet won an NAACP Award last night. My regular readers know that I’m not big on awards shows. There are plenty of blogs that cover who won what and who wore what. That’s not my thing.

Furthermore, I don’t know why Janet fans think I don’t like her or that I’m always dissing her. My regular readers know I’m always for the underdog – and make no mistake about it – Janet is definitely an underdog given the fact that she is currently being blackballed by the industry.

Miss Jackson won an NAACP Award last night for her role in Tyler Perry‘s “Why Did I Get Married?” Denzel Washington was the big winner of the evening with four trophies for his film about a college debate team. READ MORE…

Rihanna and her pal Chris Brown get shady

Rihanna and her good friend Chris Brown got shady together at a Grammy gifting suite. Yeah, I know the Grammys are over, but this story is too cute!

Want more evidence of a potentially budding romance between Rihanna and Chris Brown? I heard the two were doing a little swagging together at the Grammys. A fellow swagger told me they hit the official awards gifting suite to find some new sunglasses.

The two music superstars arrived together but were careful about not leaving any photographic evidence behind. They declined having their pictures taken.

Even so, Rihanna walked away with a fierce pair of Balenciaga shades while her 18-year-old maybe-boyfriend took home two pairs of oversize Marc Jacobs glasses in red and blue.

My spy also informed me that at one point “Chris was telling her they needed to go, and in seconds they were gone.” (Source)

When a weave job goes terribly wrong

Photos: Wireimage/Getty

I wasn’t going to post this because I know every other blog is posting pics from the NAACP Awards yesterday. But I couldn’t let this slide. I have no clue why former America’s Top Model Eva Pigford allowed her stylist to do this to her head. This is what happens when a stylist is in a hurry and convinces her client that a bad weave job is in fact the new style.

It looks like a tangled web of weave matted in with her natural hair. I think the stylist meant well, but when she saw that the style wasn’t taking shape after 6 hours of weaving she said, ‘f*ck it, she’ll never know the difference!

I thought we as a people were beginning to embrace our natural hair and abandoning the weaves and extensions? No doubt Eva asked her boyfriend, actor Lance Gross, if her weave looked good. And no doubt he told her ‘hell, yeah it looked good.’ Because he knows like every other man that when a woman asks her man a leading question – she’s already given him the correct answer.

AP: Barry Bonds failed drug test report was a typo

Just as the chorus of ‘I told you so’s’ resounded throughout newsrooms and sports bars around the country – the AP reports that a presumed failed drug test by slugger Barry Bonds was a typo.

A typo in court papers regarding Barry Bonds filed late Thursday by federal prosecutors touched off a brief tempest over the mistaken belief that he failed a drug test in November 2001, one month after breaking the home run record.

In fact, the government meant to reference a previously reported November 2000 failed drug test, U.S. attorney spokesman Josh Eaton said. That drug test was included in the indictment unsealed last year, when prosecutors said the test was for a player they called “Barry B.”

The mistake prompted at least one erroneous report that was quickly posted to Web sites around the country.

The filing amounted to federal prosecutors defending their questioning of Bonds before a grand jury, and urging a judge to keep the slugger’s perjury prosecution on track.

Bonds had argued that the questions posed to him by prosecutors were ambiguous and confusing. He demanded that the five-count indictment charging him with lying to a grand jury be tossed out. Bonds has pleaded not guilty. (Source)
