Two suspects in custody in slaying of UNC student

It took over a week, but Chapel Hill police finally have the two thugs in custody for the senseless murder of a popular University of North Carolina honors student.

Eve Carson, 22, was gunned down in her vehicle and her body dumped on a city street after she was car jacked outside her home near the UNC campus.

Police say Lawrence Alvin Lovette, Jr, 17, the suspected triggerman, and his buddy Demario James Atwater, 21, of Durham, are both charged with first degree murder.

What makes this crime especially chilling is the casual way in which both men went about their lives after killing Carson.

Lovette logged into his Myspace page on Sunday, several days after the murder, and Atwater went shopping with Carson’s cash and had his long hair braided by a girlfriend. Both men are known to the juvenile corrections system in North Carolina.

Lovette is also charged with killing Abhijit Mahato, a 29 year old Duke graduate student who was shot back in January.

State records indicate both suspects are currently on parole. Lovette was given a suspended sentenced in January for misdemeanor larceny and breaking and entering. Atwater was convicted of felony breaking and entering in 2005 and illegal possession of a firearm in 2007. He also received a suspended sentence. (Source)

Atwater was arrested first early Wednesday morning after police received a tip from the public and surrounded a home where he was staying. He was ambushed when he left the home around 5 AM. Police roughed him up a llittle (as they should) and were able to extract his accomplice’s name from him.

After circulating a more recent photo of the shooter, Lovette, police received another tip on the location where he was hiding in Durham. The juvenile surrendered peacefully early this morning after police surrounded the home. Both men are being held without bond.

I find it amazing the depths they go to track down white homocides but leave us to figure out our own deaths this is straight BS, A white girl went missing in Aruba how long ago & they went thru hell & high water to track whoever down!! Another thing….absense of God in your life simply results in evil. This is not how life is intended to be. So yes it does start in the home with the training from parents. But I don’t think anyone plans on their child being a murderer or robber. Then you have other cases where cards were dealt bad and someone had a tough life and ended up as a “success”.

Put these animals in prison for life with no parole – there was no reason to kill that girl. I’m from NC and I know how crazy Durham-ites (yeah, that’s what we call them) can be. And I agree – this is the reason EVERYONE (not just white people) hates black people. I know there are plenty of black folks making it happen, but there are also too many involved in drugs, crime & violence. This is truly sad, I have no sympathy for any senseless murderer(s) may they rot in hell. Not saying this is always the case but a lot of black on black murders that have witnesses dont give police information of what they saw; probably out of fear. They go knocking from door to door only to be told the same thing, “I didn’t see or hear anything” and majority of the time murder cases are solved a lot faster because of cooperating witnesses (personal statements/tips/leads). I realized with the Philant case as an example, that just because I don’t hear about it personally does not mean the police aren’t doing their jobs of trying to get a murderer off the streets.

I personally feel that in a lot (*NOT ALL*) of murder cases when they are black on black vs black on white the media coverage is most definitely different. @pinkvirgo I know that when someone is killed it doesn’t matter what color the killer is someone lost their life but, I honestly say the same thing. (sp)

I have read some of the comments and people are saying that if the victims were black they would still be looking for the suspects. That is because we have the stupid no snitching rule in the black community. When someone in the community gets shot and killed just about everyone around there knows who did it but will not say anything b/c they don’t want to be called a snitch, and they don’t trust the police. How can anyone help our community when we will not even do our part.
As far as these two idiots I hope they do get the death penalty b/c there was no excuse for them to kill that girl.

Hello, did anyone hear about the 6 blacks shot and killed in Memphis on Mon, Mar 3, 2008? Two were children, 2 and 4 years old. Three other children were critically injured, one 10 months old, one stabbed in the forehead with a knife, the other, 2 of their fingertips cut off. All were under 9 years of age. But check this out: The brother did it! He’d just gotten out of prison last yr after doing a 14 yr stint for murder!!!!! What the f*** is wrong with our people? And the police only found out because the 9 yr old who lived identified him. Now call him a snitch!(He’ll probably get the $30,000 award.) Shouldn’t this story have made headlines?

^^^amen..however, there is equality in these slayings..a young african american girl was killed point blank in my town, sitting at Popeyes..the shooter was a white guy..he didn’t know her, just saw the color of her skin and decided to kill her..it didn’t make headlines, but they were relentless in finding the killer and got ahold of him in no time..I know the news doesn’t care about us as victims, but justice was served and that’s all I care about at this point…

I live in Raleigh. For those that don’t know Durham/Raleigh/ Chapel Hill are all the same area. This was not a black/ white thing. This was a stupid thing. They kidnapped that girl first and used her ATM card in a number of places. The photos were captured by the ATM machine and at a store where they attempted to use her card while they were they only ones around. Not a black/white thing. Just a case of stupid criminals.

My heart goes out to her family and friends, but please let this be a lesson, esp. to college students. They get so caught upin campus life that they forget that the real world is still spinning around them.

Well sad as this incident is the problem continues to grow unchecked. Prison is not the solution and as long as we pretend it is there is no end to this kind of violence in site. The only solutions are extreme and possibly requires the violation of civil rights. We all know that won’t happen so we just have to accept this the way it is and try to keep safe.

I hear you. I live in NC, but I’m from DC and the crime rate here is beginning to match the one at home. The reason why most crimes against blacks go unsolved is because people in our communities won’t talk out of fear of becoming an outcast. We use to be a group of people who felt obligated to look at for each other and protect one another (Bell Theory), but for some reason we lost that mentality and replaced it with “MIND YOUR BUSINESS” and “KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT” and it’s sad.

U make sense, but then again, u have to looks at the lengths these families go to, how much money they put out just to catch the killers. Some people think that when a love one is killed you can leave the murders to be solves in the law hands. It takes more than that. I don’t know what it is, but with some white murder cases, the families take it upon themselves to look for the killers instead of just leaving it in the laws hands. In some black murder cases, which could happen to more less fortunate families, they trust in the law to solve a case, which isn’t always good, yeah, u have some black families that may go to the length to try to have the murder solve, give out reward offers & sometimes when support stops, the families stops searching. And I also notice, that when it comes to giving out clues, whites don’t mind assisting nor giving out hints, they don’t care about putting their lives on the line for the death of a friend or love one. Some blacks, on the other hand when asked for clues, what we say, “Ain seen ish. I don’t no what happen. I heard a shot or a scream, but ain see nothing.” Knowing damn well Lil’ Ray-Ray, Ant or Mark don’t witness something and lyin wit a str8 face. It’s sad but true, I don’t care how many of y’all disagree but this shit happens in urban neighborhoods everyday. Yet we don’t know what happen, but when the ambulance and cops arrive on the scene we want to be the ones to go out to the scenes 2 c what happen. CRAZY!!!
