With the stroke of a pen yesterday, President Barack Obama signed an executive order beefing up “sexual orientation” employee protections that already exist within the federal government.
The new executive order gives protections to gays, bisexuals, and transsexual employees of federal contractors. The executive order does not include religious exemptions — meaning Catholic, Jewish and Muslim organizations that do business with the federal government cannot fire employees whose sexual preferences conflict with the organizations’ religious morals or beliefs.
Critics call the new executive order nothing more than a political stunt by a president who is preoccupied with blazing his trail in history books. They point to the lack of complaints by federal employees who are fired simply for being gay.
While Obama was busy taking photo ops with gay interest groups in the Oval office yesterday, thousands of Detroit residents were going without one basic necessity — clean running water. The city shut off their water due to nonpayment of water bills. In an effort to get the water turned back on for thousands of low-income residents, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund filed a lawsuit against the city on Monday.
Meanwhile, thousands of illegal immigrants, including dangerous gang members, continue to pour en masse over the border into Texas, creating a massive financial burden on the residents of Texas who must foot the bill to house and feed them.
Exasperated Texas Governor Rick Perry finally took action on Monday and ordered 1,000 members of the National guard to the Texas-Mexico border. Obama has repeatedly refused requests to visit the border to view the crisis for himself.
Back in Detroit, 2,000 residents took to the streets last week to protest the “discriminatory” water shut offs.
The NAACP Legal Defense Fund complained that the water shut offs were “racially motivated,” and that the city was targeting “the most vulnerable citizens” while ignoring major corporations who are millions of dollars delinquent on their water bills.
“These companies are basically Caucasian companies,” said attorney Alice Jennings. “The folks who are being cut off are almost one hundred percent African American.”
The beleaguered Detroit Water and Sewage Department has promised to cease water shut offs for 15 days while getting the word out to residents that the city will help poor people pay for water.
“We don’t have, you know, a bottomless cup of funds,” water department spokesman Greg Eno said Monday, adding it’s important that affected customers come in as soon as possible to apply for help.
As for the claims that the water department showed favoritism to corporations while targeting poor blacks who can’t flush their toilets, Eno said corporations are being given shutoff notices, too; and some, including Chrysler, have already paid up millions in overdue bills.
Meanwhile, amidst an avalanche of domestic and international crises, President Obama busies himself playing golf, grinning in photo ops at fundraisers, and cementing his legacy as the worst president in American history.
